Nishan Akgulian’s artwork is a product of his love of gestural drawing and the minimalist aesthetic. Combining expressive brush strokes with carefully designed abstract shapes he always strives to give a visual energy to every image he creates.

Nishan was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Washington University School of Fine Arts (now Washington University School of Art) where he received a BFA in graphic communications. He currently resides in New York City.

Nishan’s work has appeared in numerous national and international magazines, advertising campaigns and corporate publications (A partial client list includes: The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, United Airlines, Lands' End, Major League Baseball, Sprint & Citibank.) He has done nearly 100 greeting cards for Marcel Schurman Fine Papers and Graphique de France, and has been included in numerous industry illustration annuals, including Communication Arts, Print magazine & American Illustration. His artwork has also been exhibited in several juried group shows in New York City, as well as Providence, RI, Hartford, CT, Evanston, IL, and Racine, WI. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators.
